Protagonist: Be the Hero of Your Own Story

Who We Are:

Protagonist is the one and only English Debate club in Goyang Global High School. It is one of the first Clubs founded with the school’s beginning and has a long reputation for its depth in English activities. In today’s world, the ability to express yourself fluently in English is highly valued and required of students. Protagonist exists to enhance those academic English skills through debates. Our aim is to make sure that students do not feel reluctant with formal English discussion and rather view it as a tool of exploration to see the world in its full depth. Furthermore, we don’t stop at debating- our ultimate goal is to influence the world by linking debate results to practical activities.

What We do:

The fundamental activity Protagonist does is Asian Parliamentary Debate. We get used to English speaking and improve our vocabulary with this traditional debate style. Through the process of selecting topics, organizing the propositions and executing the debate, our English skills are tested and enhanced. We try to include a variety of topics from controversial news to advanced science subjects in order to get a understand the world in a wholesome view.

We also have the ProtaxProta Classics Project, where an upperclassman and an underclassman get together and read a Classic chosen with careful consideration from famous recommendation lists. After reading, we extract discussion topics and do a short presentation. We then all get together and do a free debate on the said topics. With this project, we can understand the cultures and improve our basic knowledge of humanities.

Our finale is the Global Exchanges. We choose a topic and do many exchanges regarding it. As of the year 2019, the topic is Saving the Environment. We debated the pros and cons of fine dust regulation, experienced the Seoul Environment Movie Festival and discussed our actions on saving the environment(coming up in our future posts!). We hope to get valuable lessons by sharing knowledge with different countries to make a better world.

As our name “Protagonist” suggests, we hope to become the leading character; a leader or a champion of the world by English debating; and by participating in an exchange with us, you can become a Protagonist as well! It’s as simple as leaving a comment. We look forward to hearing from you!
